An alternative way to reach Machu Picchu is by bus from Cusco. While this option is more economical, it takes at least two days to travel to the destination and return to Cusco via the same route.
Backpackers typically take buses from Cusco to Quillabamba, getting off at Santa María. From there, they need to catch a transport to Santa Teresa, and then another vehicle to Hidroeléctrica. The journey requires a hike from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes, which is the first day's travel.
On the second day, visitors can explore Machu Picchu in the morning, then begin the return hike from Machu Picchu to Hidroeléctrica, followed by Santa Teresa, Santa María, and finally back to Cusco. This trip can be quite exhausting.
The main advantage of this bus option is its affordability, with daily departures available. However, it does require more time and presents certain risks, especially during the rainy season from December to March. It's recommended primarily for those in good physical condition.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu:
For hiking enthusiasts, reaching Machu Picchu via the original Inca Trail is undoubtedly a dream option. There are two main hiking choices available: the classic 4-day, 3-night Inca Trail and the shorter 2-day, 1-night Inca Trail.
To embark on either of these hikes, it is necessary to book through a travel agency that operates tours on the Inca Trail, as independent access is not permitted.
One of the key advantages of this route to Machu Picchu is that everything is organized by the travel agency. Participants will have the opportunity to explore unique trails, visit archaeological sites in the Peruvian Andes, and follow the original Inca path leading to Machu Picchu.
However, it’s important to note that not all travelers may have access to this hike due to limited space availability and budget constraints.
Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu
This is an alternative hike to Machu Picchu. Some travel agencies offer this service, but you can complete the hike on your own if you know the route or choose to go with a professional guide.
The Salkantay hike lasts for 5 days and 4 nights, allowing you to experience stunning snow-capped mountains and lagoons, such as Laguna Humantay. One of the benefits of this hike is that there is availability year-round; however, it is recommended to undertake the hike between March and December, as prices tend to be lower compared to the Inca Trail.
